Batemans Bay Urban Creeks Floodplain Risk Management Study and Plan
In 2021, Eurobodalla Council adopted a flood study for Batemans Bay Urban Creeks. This includes Batemans Bay, Catalina, Batehaven, Sunshine Bay, Surfside, Long Beach, and Maloneys Beach.
We are now undertaking a Floodplain Risk Management Study and Plan (FRMSP) to:
- improve our understanding of how flooding affects the Batemans Bay area
- inform management options to reduce risk to life and property.
Background Consultation and Preliminary Options
As part of this 2021 flood study, we assessed risk and flood behaviour around seven urban creeks within the Batemans Bay catchment. We assessed the risk to people, private property, infrastructure, and your local facilities.
At the beginning of this flood study, we gathered community experiences of flooding via drop-in sessions in Batemans Bay. This community input helped to inform and calibrate the Urban Creeks Flood Study. We will follow a similar approach during this next phase of the project.
Consultation and Preliminary Options
Through agency and community consultation held between July and September 2024, a preliminary list of options have been identified for further investigation. These range from better maintenance of drainage channels and culverts, to road raising and physical structures changes on the floodplain to better control flood behaviour.
Click on the map to take a closer look at the preliminary list of options for the Batemans Bay Floodplain Risk Management Study and Plan.
The next step in the process will be modelling some of these priority options and ensuring that they offer value for money and do not cause negative impacts elsewhere on the floodplain.
Why is Eurobodalla Council undertaking this Floodplain Risk Management Study and Plan?
The NSW Government has a framework for developing Floodplain Studies and Plans.
The 2021 Batemans Bay flood study defined the nature and extent of flooding in Batemans Bay Urban Creeks. The Floodplain Risk Management Study considers the 2021 flood study's findings and assesses management options considering existing and proposed development.
The Floodplain Risk Management Plan (FRMSP) can then provide Council, NSW Government agencies, and stakeholders with a management plan for the floodplain. The plan will be undertaken alongside the Floodplain Risk Management Study. Council will implement the recommendations after the plan is adopted.
We are seeking further input from the community to identify your flooding concerns and how we can improve flood management in your local area.
Benefits to the community
- Increased safety and resilience of the community through a better understanding of flood behaviour and how emergency services.
- Mitigation measures for housing and businesses in the Batemans Bay area.
- Minimised risk of losses to our community from flood events.
- Inform master planning, development controls and priorities for infrastructure upgrades.
Get involved
We want to hear from you. Your contributions will help us to understand the locations of concern regarding flooding. We are also interested in your suggestions for managing the flooding so we can evaluate these ideas in more detail.
You can take a quick (five-minute) survey at the end of this page to let us know about your experiences of flooding in the Batemans Bay area, and how you would like to see it managed into the future.
The survey closes on Friday 11th October 2024, at 5pm.
Stay in touch
There will be additional opportunities to give your input once we have drafted a list of flood risk management options. If you'd like to be kept up to date on these opportunities, please sign up for email updates:
